Mobile Compliancy: Avoid the Punishment of Google

As of April 2015, Google has been steadily putting together an incentive infrastructure for website owners to optimize their sites for mobile browsers. For most of these website owners, the "incentive" is keeping or improving their SEO ranking. Websites that aren't compliant are being quietly moved to the far edges of Google's search results pages.

What does this mean for you?

It means that if your website doesn't feature responsive design to cater to mobile users, you will effectively be punished by Google and sent to 10th page Siberia. At this point, if your site isn't fully optimized for mobile users you are probably already there.

In order to get your site back on the first page where it belongs, you need to make it mobile-friendly, responsive to screens of all sizes and quick-to-load even in less than ideal network conditions.

Responsive Design vs. Quick Load Times

As Greg Hickman of points out, there is a SEO trade-off between responsive design and fast load times. Google doesn't like websites that aren't fully responsive, but it also doesn't like websites that take too long to load. This means that you're going to have to determine just how fully featured your mobile-friendly site can be.

For instance, video-heavy sites with lots of fancy CSS coding might look great on a desktop with an extra fast Internet connection, but a 4-year old second-rate smartphone simply doesn't have the resources to handle such a request quickly.

Not everyone who accesses your site is going to have an ultra-powerful quad-core phone in-hand, or even a particularly reliable network, so you need to slim your site down. Here's a few good ways to do that:

• Tell JavaScript to Load When Needed—try to cut down the amount of data your site needs to load, and defer whatever you can to load when the user needs it. If you cut out all unnecessary CSS and external JavaScript, you could get your load speed down to under a second.

• Make Videos Optional—Any video content you may have should fall under the "load only when necessary" category. Furthermore, you'll want to make sure your video formats are Google-friendly. A reality of video content is that some videos simply refuse to play on some smartphones, and trying to load an unplayable video is the easiest way to frustrate a potential customer.

• Kill Pop-ups & Interstitials—Ever been browsing the Web on your smartphone and had a pop-up throw you onto a different page, breaking your concentration while advertising to you? You probably got annoyed, and Google did too. Make your mobile experience as smooth as possible by getting rid of these.
